making everyday a “vacation” ::

each time i travel, i always wonder how to bring the feeling of relaxation and enjoyment home with me into my everyday routine of chaos.  after a wonderful trip to mexico with my husband a few years back, i even went to the extent of buying an omelette pan {since the gorgeous hotel where we stayed had an ultra-talented chef creating made-to-order omelettes at the ocean side restaurant each morning}, and bought a box of those wonderful mints that were left on our pillows by the hotel staff {let’s just say that didn’t last, and most of those mints were unwrapped in the kitchen during a stressful afternoon or two!}  so how to bring the wonderfully relaxing feeling of travels home?  in your decor, of course!

when i began to think of what all of the “nicer” hotels where we’ve stayed have in common, i immediately thought of the bedding.  i love to use solid neutral bedding in many of my design projects, often with layers of different textured and varying colors of accent pillows, but sometimes even with soothing neutrals, some bedrooms require a “pop” of color.  the answer?  a coverlet!

 i knew i wanted to add a bit more color to my client’s master bedroom in the way of coverlet, and when she said she had just enough fabric left from the window valance, we knew it would be perfect to finish the foot of her bed!  {note :: these photos are not of the final home for this coverlet, but of my own bedding with a few pillows i was able to gather from around the house to add a finished look to the photos.  i’ll share the final photos with you as soon as my client’s duvet arrives!}

and now this beautiful custom coverlet is all ready to deliver to my client!  i can’t wait to see how it finishes her master bedroom!  as you look at the rooms in your home this holiday season, don’t think only of the “decor” but also how you can incorporate family memories from your travels … and bring design to your everyday!

new art & an old frame ::

a while ago, i shared a little about my love of thrifting … finding a hidden treasure that has been cast aside by someone, and showing it a little t.l.c. to give it a new life.  you may remember this set of 34″ square frames whose potential was in hiding.

when i bought this pair, i wasn’t sure whether they would find a new home in my own house or that of a client, but when i needed a large piece of art {for a small price} recently in a client’s master bedroom, i knew that one of these frames was on its way out of the nicole odette designs studio!

all it took was an hour on a saturday afternoon, a yard of printed canvas from hobby lobby, and ta da!  this frame is completely updated and ready for its place on the deep gray wall of  a master bedroom sitting area!  want to update a lightly loved frame for your home?  find the step by step here https://nicoleodettedesigns.wordpress.com/2012/10/10/a-new-life-for-an-old-frame/ … before you know it, you’ll have a piece of unique art for your own home!

thankful ::

how blessed we are to have a day set aside each year for the purpose of giving thanks … for our family, our friends, and for all the beauty that surrounds each of our days.  i too am thankful for all of these things, in fact, i give thanks for them every day of the year.  but there’s another group of people that top my “thankful” list this year … you!  i am so very thankful for my clients and those who glean inspiration from this blog and my nicole odette designs facebook page!

you’ve welcomed me into your homes, be it in person or online, and allowed me to share with you design tips to create the homes of your dreams!  you’ve given me the opportunity to live my dream, and for that i am thankful!

shop local this Christmas – featuring BEad ORIGINAL ::

As my husband and I were out on our “date night” this weekend, he shared with me how excited he was for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  While I didn’t want to put a damper on his holiday spirit, I could feel the stress and anxiety build … because we all know that the mom is the one who bears the pressure of making the holidays memorable for everyone, right?  Each year I tell myself “this year will be different”, but when it comes down to it, the stress and pressure seem to take over my season every time.  So this year, I came up with a different plan … a way to create a fun and festivities from now to the New Year, without the stress!

One of my top things to make the season more meaningful is to shop locally whenever possible – there are so many wonderful local businesses in my community that I intend to help them out as much as I am able.  My decision to shop locally gave me an idea … why not share some of my favorites with my readers, many of which are local as well!

Welcome BEad ORIGINAL by Liz Rease, the first of my “shop local” features!  Liz is a wife, mother of 5, and an ultra-talented designer of one-of-a-kind jewelry … let’s face it, she’s pretty much an all-around super woman, and the jewelry she designs and makes by hand is simply amazing!

Several of Liz’s pieces have been featured in BeadTrends magazine, and while she enjoys working with precious metals and semi-precious stones, she is always on the look out for pieces and materials that provide her with additional inspiration!

If you love the jewelry at BEad ORIGINAL as much as I do, and plan to organize your holidays to put a damper on the stress and pressure that often accompany them, order your favorites from BEad ORIGINAL today!  Liz has many more beautiful pieces available in her Etsy shop at http://www.beadoriginalbyliz.etsy.com and was sweet enough to provide a coupon code in her shop for readers of the Nicole Odette Designs blog!  When you place an order in the BEad ORIGINAL Etsy shop, enter coupon code HOLIDAYSFS (good through January 1, 2013).  Shipping is available in the U.S. only.  Also visit Liz at facebook.com/beadoriginal or via email at beadoriginal@cox.net.  Thanks so much to Liz for sharing her beautiful jewelry photos!

step by step ::

Here’s how the design process works around my house {and in the homes of many people I know}.  Begin with a great idea and a load of excitement … start clearing the area to be worked on … oh, just found an accessory that I love – wait – get the hard work done first then accessorize as a “reward” for completing the project … yipes!  the pantry is empty and family is complaining … go to the grocery store … take kids to practices ….  Hold on!!!  Where do those last steps fit in the design process???  Sometimes everyday tasks get in the way of designing the homes of our dreams, but only when you take that jump, begin the project, and take it step by step, do you see the results that bring a smile to your face!

This client’s home is a prime example.  With darling twin toddler boys, it can be a challenge to get her home exactly as she wants, but I admire my client for taking it bit by bit to bring beautiful style and design to her home!  One of these days, I’ll do a complete “home tour” to show you what we’ve accomplished on the main level of her home, but for today I’d like to share with you our first “steps” to beautiful design!

“before”

Last spring, my client asked me to take a look at the master bedroom in her home and offer suggestions for a complete redesign.  Her only requests – incorporate a dark gray wall color, contrasting bedding {she tended to like bright pops of yellow once I shared a few ideas with her}, and use a few pieces of furniture that were in storage in her home.  The first steps?  A design board and room layout keeping my client’s requests in mind.  Not shown on this board are the bright white bedding that I suggested and painted white headboard that she had her eye on!

My client loved the nailhead trimmed tufted chair and since it was in stock at a local furniture store, she ran to pick that up right away.  The room has been painted, and the other pieces are coming together!

… and our floor plan!

I had the chance to stop by my client’s home earlier this week to check the progress and am so happy to see things moving in the right direction!  {excuse the quality of my photos – my lighting wasn’t the best, but wanted to take a minute to show that it’s ok to take your design projects bit by bit!}

“during”

There’s that chair from the design board, fabric that will be used for the valance {look – it’s on the top left corner of our design board}, and my client’s side table that she reclaimed from storage – we’ll make it work!

New nightstand with my client’s lamp … just wait, the accessories and new hardware will make it pop!

So while this master bedroom isn’t yet magazine worthy, it’s on the way!  Wall art, a bright white duvet, finishing furniture, accessories, and accent pillows will give this space a wonderfully finished feel and a complete transformation from its earlier days of beige!

design without “rules” ::

Remember years ago when there were so many “rules” of fashion and design?  “Don’t wear stripes with plaids” …. “small rooms aren’t meant for dark colors” …. you get the idea!  This recent powder bath refresh that I completed with my friend and client goes to show that rules are meant to be broken!

“before”

 Like so many powder bathrooms, this powder bath shared the color and feel of the neighboring hall, but longed for a personality all its own!  Our first job was to find the perfect color, and Sherwin-Williams Otter did the trick.  Then we found a large thrifted frame and changed the color to match that of the wall.  In went a gorgeous piece of textured fabric and a unique piece of wall art was born!

Here’s the original frame before its transformation {I posted the steps a while back for you do-it-yourselfers}.  All it took was imagination and a bit of elbow grease to create a new focal point for the powder bathroom!

“after”
