a new life for an old frame ::

my close friends and clients know how much i love a great do-it-yourself {better known as “d.i.y.”} project, and often have one … ok, maybe five … going at all times in my studio!  today i wanted to share with you this wonderful d.i.y. project that is full of impact and character.  the best part?  anyone can do this!

so here’s how it all began!  this beautiful 38″ square frame found for only $25 at goodwill!

first, i had to remove the paper backing, glass, mat board, and existing print.  have your tool box handy because you’ll need it!

these next few steps take a bit of muscle, but are so necessary to ensure a professionally finished look in the end!  i took a fine/medium grit sand paper and sanded the surface of this frame to remove some of the gold finish and create a surface to which primer would adhere.  i was so lucky to find a beautiful solid wood frame underneath all of the gold!

once the frame was completely sanded {and cleaned with a damp cloth} the primer was ready to go!  since i knew that i was painting the frame a dark color, i applied a tinted primer … two coats, of course!

next came the deep espresso paint {since it was a dark color, i applied three coats}, and the finish gloss coat!  once those were complete, i took a gorgeous piece of slate blue textured fabric that my client and i selected, cut it to size and wrapped the original mat board with the fabric.

…. and the finished art!  i absolutely love how a cast away frame was refreshed into a focal point for my client’s powder bathroom!
