here comes the sun ::

the sunburst mirror continues to be a hot decor statement in any room this summer!  ideal above a fireplace mantle, over the headboard of a bed, or as a “wow” factor in an entry, a sunburst mirror provides so many wonderful elements of design … a mixture of materials {often glass and metal}, the reflective quality of a mirror that makes a room appear larger, and instant trendy style!

bold bookcases ::

looking for another simple way to update the design of your home?  look no further than your built-in bookcases or shelves!  those places tend to be a dumping ground for outdated accessories, or old photos, and a bit of hidden dust, but with a little work and creativity, they can be a fresh new focal point for any room!

Image

{source :: the coveteur via decorpad.com}

don’t just purchase a new accessory to place on a shelf and hope for a great result.  i tell my clients to start from scratch when arranging bookcases or shelves.  remove all items from the space and rearrange one by one until you get it right!  try to vary heights, sizes, shapes, and colors on each shelf but balance them throughout the space.  also when arranging accessories, try to use items in an odd number – these groupings are typically more pleasing visually.

select items with different materials and textures for a professionally designed look!  for instance, pair a wooden bowl with a glass statue, or a metal piece with ceramic accessories as in the photo above!

this client called me and asked that i add a bit of pizzaz to the built-in bookcases in her great room.  luckily, she already had some great accessories to work with, but with a bit more color found in a few new pieces, we were able to create just the look she wanted!

when redesigning your space, don’t neglect the built-ins and shelves … simple updates to these spaces can provide the touch of style that you’re looking to accomplish in your home!

design is in the details ::

one of the most common reasons that people hesitate to tackle their home design projects {or so i’ve been told}, is that the project is too overwhelming, too expensive, or too difficult to start.  sometimes the best advise i can give is to keep it simple – if your budget doesn’t allow for a room make-over complete with new designer furnishings, that’s ok.  if you don’t have enough time to complete the entire project in one weekend, start it anyway!  it’s easy to take little steps to make a big impact in the design of your home!  just to show you how true this is, today i’m sharing some simple “before & afters” … one client who didn’t need a complete redesign but a simple freshen up!  more simple update design projects to follow later this week!

Image

“before” :: this wonderful client simply wanted an update to her existing sofa and accent cushions, and draperies to frame the beautiful view off the back of her home!

Image

first … here are the gorgeous fabrics that we selected for her windows!  we paired them with a few more stunning fabrics to recover the accent pillows in her great room and even added a couple pre-made pillows.

Image

“after” :: the finished result!  bold fabrics make the existing sofa look fresh and new, and visual height is added to the window, making the ceiling look even higher and the room even larger!  design tip :: when hanging drapes, try raising the drapery rods at least 6″ – 8″ above the window trim to make the ceiling height of the room appear taller!

oh la la ottomans ::

what can function as a chair, a table, or both?  what is available in any size and price range?  what can bring a burst of color or pattern to any room in the house?  it’s an ottoman, of course!

Image

{source :: pinterest.com}

ottomans are one of my favorite pieces to use when designing a space because even though they are trendy, stylish, and sophisticated, they are so darned functional too!

Image

{source :: pinterest.com}

another reason why i love ottomans???  they can fit into any style of room or home decor!

Image

{source :: pinterest.com}

and they can be found in any fabric imaginable!  if you can’t find them in a fabric that brings a smile to your face, simply recover!

i {heart} ikat ::

the perfect fabric can absolutely make or break a room!  so when i met with one of my fabulous clients last week to look at fabrics for her great room, my focus was on the colors we discussed … rich magenta, bold orange, stunning gold!  i thought i had found the perfect fabric to tie all these colors together – a gorgeous ikat with our colors plus a punch of plum, but when my client saw the ikat, she gave that fabric an immediate thumbs down {luckily, i had more in my stack that made the cut}!  it really made me think about the ikat pattern – many people, especially in the midwest, shy away from the trendy, bold, colorful print or tend to think that it looks like a southwestern print from the ’90s.  not so, dear decoraholics!

Image

{source :: pinterest.com}

i think the problem is that it can be difficult for someone not used to this bright, bold pattern to visualize how an ikat can bring fun and sophistication into a room among other patterns and colors.  so here you are … a few of my favorite ways to be the trendsetter on your block with ikat!

there are so many things i love about working in interior design that they’re too many to count!  my clients are amazing, and i enjoy collaborating with each and every one of them to create a design unique to their lifestyle; people in this industry overflow with creativity, inspiration, and enthusiasm that it’s difficult not to catch; and on a dark, rainy night when the house is finally quiet for the day …

quiet blog = buzzing studio ::

it’s true … when my blog is quiet, studio projects are buzzing!  that explains the silence of my blog the past week!  but there’s good news!  i have several projects wrapping up with photos to share with you, and new items available in the studio ready to bring a burst of bright summer color into your home!  remember these thrifted frames?

Image

all they needed was a bit of TLC to take on completely new lives!  first a light sanding and 2 coats of primer …

Image

Image

several light coats of color and a clear gloss top …

Image

Image

then to be filled with just the right paper / fabric and they’re all ready for their place {for sale} in the studio!
